Most Airbnb cleaning checklists you find online are generic. "Clean the bathroom. Mop the floor. Change the sheets." That's not a checklist. It's a task list for someone who has never cleaned a vacation rental professionally.
A real checkout cleaning checklist is built from experience. It's built knowing which points trigger guest complaints, which corners cleaners skip when they're in a hurry, and which details separate a 4-star review from a 5-star one.
This checklist is based on our work cleaning for property management companies in Barcelona, including EasyFlatBCN, Open Air Homes, Kiwi House and KROLDO. We clean over 100 properties in neighborhoods from Eixample to Barceloneta and Gracia. Every point on this list exists because we've seen what happens when it's forgotten.
On arrival (before you start cleaning)
Photograph every room. With timestamp. This documents the condition the previous guest left the apartment in. If there's damage, stains, missing items, or excessive dirt, these photos are your evidence for filing claims on Airbnb or Booking.com.
Check for damage. Walk through all rooms and note anything broken, stained, or missing. Report immediately to the manager with photos. Don't wait until after cleaning.
Check inventory. Remote controls, keys, welcome book, kitchen utensils. Anything in the property inventory that's missing needs to be communicated now, not after the next guest complains.
Kitchen
Countertops and backsplash: clean all surfaces including the gap between countertop and wall where crumbs accumulate.
Stovetop: remove grates or glass cover, clean underneath.
Oven interior and door glass (inside and out).
Microwave interior: remove turntable, clean inside and behind.
Fridge interior: check every shelf, drawers, door compartments. Remove any food left by previous guest.
Dishwasher: run an empty cycle if there were dirty dishes. Check the filter.
Sink and faucet: clean the base of the faucet where limescale builds up. Barcelona has very hard water.
Trash: empty all bins including the small bathroom one. Put in new bags.
Bathroom(s)
Toilet: clean inside, under the rim, the base, behind, and where the toilet meets the floor. This is the number one source of cleaning complaints.
Shower/bathtub: scrub grout, clean drain (remove hair), clean screen or curtain.
Mirror: streak-free. Check from multiple angles.
Floor: hands-and-knees check for hair in corners and behind the toilet. This takes 2 minutes and prevents the most complaints.
Towel presentation: fold clean towels uniformly.
Amenities: restock soap, shampoo, toilet paper.
Bedroom(s)
Strip all bed linen. Inspect mattress protector for stains. If stained, alert the manager.
Inspect pillows: check for yellowing, odor, or flatness.
Make the bed with clean sheets. Ensure fitted sheet is taut.
Nightstands: clean surface and inside drawers. Guests leave things in drawers constantly.
Under the bed: vacuum or sweep. Check for forgotten items.
Before you leave
Photograph every room again. With timestamp. These "after" photos confirm cleaning is complete.
Send photos to the manager via WhatsApp or Teams.
Final walkthrough: stand at the entrance and look at the apartment as a guest would on their first entry. Is the lighting right? Does it smell fresh? Is the first thing you see clean and welcoming?
