Steam cleaning isn't new, but in recent years it has become a standard for high-turnover vacation rentals. And it makes sense: it disinfects without chemicals, eliminates mites and bacteria, and leaves surfaces clean at a level that traditional methods can't match.
What is steam cleaning and how does it work
Steam cleaning uses water heated to high temperature (typically above 100C) that becomes dry steam. This steam is applied directly to surfaces through a nozzle. The heat kills bacteria, mites, and other microorganisms without the need for chemical products.
Which surfaces benefit most from steam cleaning
Mattresses: Probably the most important application for vacation rentals. Mattresses accumulate mites, dead skin cells, and sweat from each guest. You can't put them in the washing machine. We recommend steam cleaning mattresses monthly or every 6-8 turnovers.
Sofas and upholstery: Same principle as mattresses. Recommended: every 1-2 months.
Tile grout in bathrooms and kitchens: Grout is porous and accumulates dirt, mold, and bacteria. This is especially important in older apartments in neighborhoods like Gracia and El Born.
Hard floors: Periodic steam cleaning of tile or sealed hardwood eliminates residues that mopping leaves behind.
Kitchens: Steam is excellent for degreasing without chemicals.
Surfaces NOT suitable for steam cleaning
Unsealed hardwood: Steam can penetrate the wood and cause swelling.
Heat-sensitive painted surfaces
Silk and velvet
Electronics: Never apply steam to TVs, speakers, or any electronic device.
Recommended frequency for vacation rentals
Mattresses: Monthly or every 6-8 turnovers.
Sofas: Every 1-2 months.
Bathroom grout: Every 2-3 months.
Full deep steam clean: Every 2-3 months.
