7 Cleaning Mistakes That Are Hurting Your Airbnb Reviews (And How to Fix Them)

After years cleaning for property management companies in Barcelona like Open Air Homes, EasyFlatBCN, Kiwi House and KROLDO, we've seen the same mistakes hundreds of times. They're mistakes that seem small but cause negative reviews, lower the cleaning score, and cost money in lost bookings.

Mistake 1: Not inspecting bed linen before making the bed

The mistake: The cleaner strips the sheets, puts on clean ones, and makes the bed perfectly. But they didn't check the mattress protector. The guest lifts the sheet and finds a stain.

The fix: Every piece of bed linen is inspected before being placed on the bed. We carry spare sheet sets so we can swap items on the spot.

Mistake 2: Cleaning the bathroom without checking the shower drain

The mistake: The bathroom smells good and looks clean. But the shower drain has a hair clog from the last 3 guests.

The fix: Remove the drain cover at every cleaning. Pull out accumulated hair. We carry tools for this because many Barcelona apartments have covers that need specific tools to remove.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the oven and microwave interior

The mistake: Kitchen countertops shine. But the guest opens the oven and finds grease splatters from the previous guest.

The fix: Open every appliance at every turnover. Oven interior, oven door glass (both sides), microwave interior and turntable, toaster crumb tray.

Mistake 4: Not documenting the property's condition on arrival

The mistake: The cleaner arrives, cleans, and leaves. No photos. Then the next guest reports a broken lamp or stained rug. The claims window on Airbnb closes. Money is lost.

The fix: Timestamped photos on arrival, every time. Before touching anything.

Mistake 5: Using strong air fresheners to mask odors

The mistake: The apartment smells slightly stale. The cleaner sprays strong air freshener. For many guests, this signals "they're covering something up."

The fix: Ventilate. Open all windows during cleaning. Barcelona's climate allows this most of the year.

Mistake 6: Forgetting high-touch surfaces

The mistake: Surfaces are clean. Floors are mopped. But light switches have fingerprints, door handles are sticky, and the TV remote has grime on the buttons.

The fix: Clean every high-touch surface: light switches, door handles, cabinet pulls, remote controls, appliance handles, flush button, window handles.

Mistake 7: No communication system with the property manager

The mistake: The cleaner finds a problem but doesn't communicate it because they don't know who to tell, or they plan to mention it later and forget.

The fix: Integrate a communication protocol into the cleaning process. At Casa Fresca, reporting issues is not optional. It's part of the cleaning. We photograph and send to the manager immediately.
