The sofa is one of the hardest pieces of furniture to clean properly. It accumulates skin cells, dust, food residue, pet hair, and fabric oils in layers that are invisible until you look closely — or until a guest sits down and a cloud of dust rises. Here's how to approach it properly, by material type.
Step 1: Check the Cleaning Code
Before using any product on your sofa, find the care label (usually under a cushion or on the base fabric underneath). Look for the cleaning code:
- W — Water-based cleaners only
- S — Solvent-based cleaners only (no water)
- WS or SW — Either can be used
- X — Vacuum only. No water or solvent. Professional cleaning only.
Using the wrong product type — water on an S-coded sofa, or solvent on a W-coded one — can cause permanent damage: shrinkage, water marks, or colour bleeding.
Cleaning a Fabric Sofa (W or WS Code)
What you need
- Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment
- Warm water
- Upholstery shampoo or a few drops of washing-up liquid
- Two clean white cloths (not coloured — dye transfer is a risk)
- Spray bottle
Method
- Vacuum the entire sofa thoroughly — all surfaces, under cushions, and in the crevices between the seat and back. This removes the dry debris that becomes muddy if you start with water.
- Mix upholstery shampoo with water in a spray bottle according to product instructions. If using washing-up liquid, use a very small amount — 2–3 drops per 500ml.
- Test in an inconspicuous area first and allow to dry completely before proceeding.
- Work in small sections. Dampen a cloth with the solution and work in circular motions — do not saturate the fabric. The goal is damp, not wet.
- Use a second clean damp cloth (water only) to remove product residue.
- Allow to dry completely with good ventilation before replacing cushions. A fan or open windows accelerates drying.
For Stains
Address stains before general cleaning. Blot (never rub) fresh stains immediately with a clean cloth to absorb as much as possible. For old stains, a specific upholstery stain remover appropriate to the stain type (protein stains, oil stains, and tannin stains all respond to different chemistries) is more effective than a general cleaner.
Cleaning a Leather Sofa
Leather requires specific care products — general household cleaners strip the protective coating and dry the leather, leading to cracking.
What you need
- Vacuum with soft brush attachment
- Leather cleaner (available from furniture stores)
- Leather conditioner
- Soft cloths
Method
- Vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment to remove loose debris from seams and surface.
- Apply leather cleaner to a soft cloth — never directly to the sofa. Work in small sections with gentle circular motions.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
- Once fully dry, apply leather conditioner. This step is essential — leather that is cleaned without conditioning becomes dry and begins cracking within months.
Barcelona-Specific Note for Leather Sofas
Barcelona's dry summer heat and air conditioning can accelerate leather drying. Condition leather furniture at least twice a year — before summer and after.
Cleaning a Microfibre Sofa (Usually WS Code)
Microfibre is durable and stain-resistant but requires a specific approach.
Method
- Vacuum thoroughly.
- For water-safe microfibre (W or WS): spray lightly with warm water, scrub with a soft brush in circular motions, allow to dry completely. The pile may flatten slightly as it dries — brush it back up with a clean dry brush once fully dry.
- For solvent-only microfibre (S code): use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Apply lightly, scrub gently, allow to dry. This evaporates quickly without leaving water marks.
When Professional Sofa Cleaning Is Necessary
- X-coded fabric (vacuum only — professionals use dry cleaning methods)
- Significant staining that DIY methods have not resolved
- Odour that persists after cleaning (pet, smoke, mold)
- Before photographing a property for rental listing
- Annual deep clean as part of apartment maintenance
Casa Fresca Barcelona includes sofa vacuuming and surface cleaning as part of our regular cleaning service. For deep sofa cleaning, we can include it in a full apartment deep clean.
